28th January : IF and that is a HUGE IF the political class had listened to the people a bit more over the years then the country would be in a much better state.

On most big issues public opinion has been proven right and the political elite wrong. In the nineties Michael Howard’s expansion of the prison population was decried by political class opinion but backed by the people. It initiated a long fall in crime.
